From Mt. Highway, Mr. Police Officer would like to tell you the 10 Commandments of Defensive Driving:

1. Be attentive

Always pay attention. Always check your side mirrors and look far enough to see other cars not just the one in front of you. Be alert when you are near intersections and pay attention to road signals and signs. If the sign tells you it’s slippery when wet, don’t speed up or else… Pay attention to fast cars because you’ll never know if the person driving is drunk or not.

Annually, more than 40,000 people lose their life in automobile accidents each year. Another two million suffer disabling injuries. These startling statistics are from the National Safety Council. The amount of casualties could be reduced if more people learned to drive defensively.

No matter how careful or a skilled driver you are, high speeds, impaired or careless drivers, and not using occupant restraints correctly or not at all, threatens each person on the road.

How is this for an alarming statistic? In the United States 41,000 people die from motor vehicle accidents every year. Another two million sustain serious injuries. And that doesn’t include other countries around the world.

Imagine for a moment those teenagers you often see doing dangerous, senseless stunts on their bikes and skateboards. Guess what. Those teenagers grow up, become drivers and probably form part of the accident statistics already discussed.

If you arm yourself with some commonsense, defensive driving, statistics, and risk management, you can make sure you are not amongst the 41,000 or the two million.
