Defensive driving tips abound on the internet and at driving schools. However, one important technique for avoiding accidents and injury for drivers is often overlooked, and that is……Don’t trust anyone! Only ever trust yourself and what you are about to do.
When driving defensively to stay safe on the roads it is vital to never, ever rely on what the other driver will do. Take a moment to recall the driving mistakes you’ve been guilty of over the years. Then look ahead and imagine the ones you will probably make in the future. Guess what? All the other drivers are just like you! Only trust yourself!

One of the most important defensive driving tips for drivers to master is a simple one – pay attention (stay tuned!) when driving. How hard is that? Most accidents involve inattention from one or both drivers, and can be caused by many things. Sleepiness, daydreaming, physical distraction, chatting and “highway hypnosis” are common types of inattention which we have all been guilty of from time to time.
A common statement heard after a traffic accident is “He came from nowhere. I didn’t see him!” Isn’t it funny how many invisible vehicles find themselves in accidents!

Is defensive driving training is justified? Definitely.
One good reason is the reduced costs incurred when a driver is involved in an accident caused by a third party. These days, the major car insurers offer reduced premiums to drivers who enrol in defensive driving classes. When drivers take their classes progressively at designated intervals, the savings on insurance premiums can definitely make the cost of defensive driving training justified.
Many of us can remember an old but familiar driving safety slogan which points out that as a driver you may have the right of way, but if another driver disobeys traffic laws they could leave you “dead” right!
If teaching drivers to be constantly aware of their surroundings saves just one single accident, in terms of the injuries avoided, this would make defensive driving training justified.

Confused about advanced driving? Are you wondering exactly what advanced driving instruction really is?
The normal person probably thinks they are a better than average driver, possessing intermediate to advanced driving skills. In reality, advanced driving refers to high-speed driving, similar to the type of driving that police, ambulance drivers or race car drivers do on a daily basis. This type of driving can be very dangerous in the hands of an untrained driver.
If you are interested in learning advanced driving skills, or becoming an advanced driving instructor yourself, you will need to understand at least a beginners guide to advanced driving instruction. It is one thing to learn skills yourself, but it is completely another to teach those skills to someone else. There are actually two skills involved here – one is the technical skill of advanced driving, and the other is the skill of patience and teaching to transfer that knowledge to another person.
