Defensive Driving Techniques


Annually, more than 40,000 people lose their life in automobile accidents each year. Another two million suffer disabling injuries. These startling statistics are from the National Safety Council. The amount of casualties could be reduced if more people learned to drive defensively.

No matter how careful or a skilled driver you are, high speeds, impaired or careless drivers, and not using occupant restraints correctly or not at all, threatens each person on the road.

I have had the experience of teaching several people how to drive. Some were youngsters, but I have also taught a few adults how to drive too. Let’s just say that I am more than glad to have “retired” from this practice as teaching someone how to drive can be taxing mentally as well as physically. Still, not everyone has the funds to go to driving school or an available friend to help out. So, if you are one of the “lucky” ones playing the role of instructor, here are some tips to help keep you sane and your student listening.

With winter just around the corner, many people are getting their sleds ready for another great season of running the powder. There’s no better feeling for snowmobilers than gliding on a few feet of snow at high speed, perhaps performing the odd stunt or two, and generally taking pride in your machine.

RV driving safety should be at the forefront of your mind whether you have hundreds of thousands of miles of RV driving under your belt or you are a new RV driver. A key aspect of defensive driving techniques is to signal your intent when you are out on the road. This means communicating to other drivers what you are about to do. As a first step it is essential that all lights that help you communicate to other drivers are functioning.

Indicators, brake lights, head lights and other driving lights must be in good order. It’s almost impossible to adopt a defensive driving attitude if other drivers have got no idea what you intend to do.
