Defensive Driving Basics


Motorcyclists can attest to the exhilarating thrill that riding gives them. As the speed heightens, the adrenaline rush goes faster and the lump in the throat gets bigger. It’s like no other feeling in the world—becoming one with the speed of the wind as you hear the motorcycle roar.

Yes, it can be a glorious feeling but the price to pay for this wondrous experience is high. Many deaths and injuries resulting from motorcycle related accidents worry many of us. A motorcycle because it has no outer cover to shield the rider like that of a car, exposes a rider to danger many times more than a car.

Annually, more than 40,000 people lose their life in automobile accidents each year. Another two million suffer disabling injuries. These startling statistics are from the National Safety Council. The amount of casualties could be reduced if more people learned to drive defensively.

No matter how careful or a skilled driver you are, high speeds, impaired or careless drivers, and not using occupant restraints correctly or not at all, threatens each person on the road.

I have had the experience of teaching several people how to drive. Some were youngsters, but I have also taught a few adults how to drive too. Let’s just say that I am more than glad to have “retired” from this practice as teaching someone how to drive can be taxing mentally as well as physically. Still, not everyone has the funds to go to driving school or an available friend to help out. So, if you are one of the “lucky” ones playing the role of instructor, here are some tips to help keep you sane and your student listening.

Overweight and overloaded trucks pose a very serious danger on our nation’s roadways. When a truck has more weight than it can safely carry, stopping is much more difficult, and the truck is much more likely to get out of control when swerving to avoid a collision or an animal in the road.

Overloaded trucks can damage the brake and steering system of the truck. An overweight truck is an accident waiting to happen, and when trucks are involved in accidents, the results can be catastrophic and deadly due to their massive size and weight.

As the interstates and highways continue to become more populated, we can expect a rise in motor vehicle accidents. Even though trucking companies have improved their safety training, new statistics show an alarming rate of truck crashes. For years, news items have focused on driver fatigue as playing a major role in these incidents.
